Yes, that might be wrong... maybe.  Your HUB should be Poll if you are picking
up echomail from him... if you are not picking up echomail from your HUB, then
he should be DIRECT.

The OGATE and AGATEs are explained well in the manual, but trust me... you won't
need them.

Have you checked the cable? For example, in a standard 5 1/4" drive, inserting
the cable in at the drive end upside-down
 can (among other, more serious things) cause the drive motor to come on and
stay on. Not knowing just how the connector s look on your particular item,
I can only make the assumption that Apple has made THAT misadventure impossible
(as it w as not, when I was using card edge connectors years ago.) But a little
short, somewhere in your cable might be the culpr it. Try another one if you
can, or even just try pulling out and reinserting the cable you have. Costs
nothing to try.

To tell you the truth, I don't think much of it myself. I used to like it. But
the more I saw of it (mostly in educational tomes) the less I could take it.
I guess it was designed to be a classical-looking sans serif face, but to me
it looks so... so... fifties. If the world wants classic faces, it should stick
to Garamond. If it wants to be REALLY  classical, like Roman columns, for
example,

If you wonder why I'm using colons between paragraphs in the preceding message,
it's because I've decided to upload messages in text format, ie: save the
message
as plain text, <E>nter the message as though I am going to type it from the
keyboard, send the message as ASCII from ZTERM. The only thing to watch out
for is making sure there are not two consecutive carriage returns anywhere.
Thus, the colons. (I can't be sure that MS Works doesn't strip out "useless"
spaces on lines by themselves.)

Hmmm. I wonder if TeachText...? Naw, it's too icky to contemplate!

AAAAH!  No.  I never said _that_.  I said that anyone who got 2.0 from a user
group can get an update to 2.0v2 from Claris.  That's what I was told, and when
I tested it out by using the Claris customer support center on America Online,
that's exactly what happened.

I hope this hasn't caused any undue calls to Claris...

System 7 has the toolbox built into it.  You need only the tools for your
various
needs.  For MacWoof, the only thing you need is the Serial Tool.  Just drop
it in your Extensions folder (Actually, just drop it in your system folder and
it'll filter down to the Extensions folder automatically).

You'll only need a full Toolbox installer if you're using System 6; the
installer
for that modifies your system file.   Otherwise, as I said, you only need the
tools your programs require.

There is a bug that causes a crash if there are no messages in an area and you
select anything other than Send message from the Messages menu. This will be
cleaned up in the next beta release, b4.

Also, I don't really want to use EchoMac as the support echo for MacWoof. I
am in the process of getting the MacWoof echo onto the Backbone. It will be
listed in EList.108 and should shortly thereafter be available from the
backbone.

In the meantime, if you have access to MacNetCom, that might be a better interim
support venue than EchoMac.

What you need is the Serial Tool for the Comm Toolbox. If nowhere else closer,
you can download version 1.0.1 from my BBS, [phone], under the name
SERTL101.CPT.

Only if you are running a BBS at >2400 bps.  That's the carrier detect
line. (on machines without pin 7, the hardware handshake line is used

Sounds like either you don't have the handshaking lines in the cable or
you don't have hardware handshaking turned on in your terminal settings.

Some things never change.  Many years ago I was trying to set up a FKEY
to get an application to do a copy and then force the app's internal
clipboard out.  Microsoft Wierd 1.0 was doing some bizarre things and
was even calling SystemEvent.  The way they called SystemEvent
prevented FKEYs from working in the then new System 4.1.  (This was
around the time of the infamous Word 3.00)  And when I tried to
disassemble Word to find out what it was doing, what I found was a
p-code interpreter with an 8086 memory model that wouldn't run beyond
the absolute address of 1 megabyte.  (Excel had that problem until
version 2.x and they took their time getting that version out)  Microsloppy
is
always putting out software that does strange things which break in the
next major software or hardware release.

Our LaserWriter Plus has 94,000 pages on it by now after 3 or 4 years of use
and I'm wondering how much more life can be expected. We want to get an
accelerator
board which quadruples the speed and doubles the resolution, but should we do
that to this old workhorse or upgrade the printer. I'm not really sure what
components wear out on the laserwriters. Any hardware experts out there?

Hmmm.
 You're extended feedback was most welcome. I will carefully weigh what
you say, since I am yet to make the final decision.

 As for the MacUser print quality rating I mentioned, it was in the
March 1991 issue, page 122. In a chart, the print or image quality of
the QMS came in slightly lower than 9 others that were being
tested/compared. The caveat was that MacUser noted that differences were
miniscule -- However, having not seen it in action myself, I threw out
the question to find out from users.

 Anyway, let me mull over your comments on the QMS 410. I am not sure I
am swayed by the resell argument, however. I think it will be much
easier to recover a larger percentage of my purchase price from the TI's
PS17 (which is selling for about $1,300 w/postscript and AppleTalk ready
to go) than the QMS 410 (selling for between $1850 and $1950, w/50-page
tray). Its partly economics; you can't lose but so much if the purchase
price is significantly cheaper.

 As someone who bought a LaserWriter IINT before the laser printer
prices dropped, that last point has been painfully learned and noted.

 As to engine life, I don't think it's a big concern for me. I've used
my LWII NT for about 10K pages in two years! That said, what difference
will it make to me if the engine life is rated 200,000 pages or 300,000
pages or 400,000 pages?  Not much.

 Anyway, your feedback is most appreciated. You know your machine, which
helps me better know which I should buy.  Decision forthcoming.....

My aim was to remove Bubble Help altogether, not just to replace its icon with
a blank icon.  I don't object to the icon itself.  My problem is with the space
it takes up on my menubar.  The blank icon would (I think) continue to take
up space even though I couldn't see it.  I've since learned that other System
7 savvy apps will depend on finding the Bubble Help menu in its correct place,
so I've given up on the idea.  Looks like my only alternative is to convince
my wife that SHE desperately needs a larger screen on MY Mac.  :-)

That's strange.  I've managed to do that kind of damage while doing some serious
mucking about in the active System file with ResEdit (a REALLY DUMB thing to
do), but I've never had that problem with Font/DA Mover.  Since FDAM gives you
access to only the resources containing fonts and DAs, I don't understand how
it could happen.

It doesn't work that way on my SE/30, nor does it work that way on the Macs
I've installed System 7 on at work.  Are you sure you don't have something else
on your system that causes that behavior (SFScroll INIT, Rebound, or Boomerang)?
 Anyway, I found SFScroll INIT and installed it, but it didn't work as expected
(or at least not as I remembered it working when I used to use it a couple of
years ago under 6.0.X).  Rebound, on the other hand, seems to work perfectly.

Yes, the "Event" option sets up Cop to call your boss node at a certain time.
 I use it to have my point call at 1:15 AM, right after his Tabby finishes a
network mail processing session.  Theoretically I should be asleep then, but
I seldom am...

"Autopilot" is like "Event", except that it is repeated automatically at event
time every day (as long as the Mac is left on with Cop running).  This is nice
if you're away on vacation, I guess, but I've never had a need for it.
Vacation?

1.2 is the latest version I've seen.  It seems to work just as well under System
7 as under 6.0.x, which is to say "Pretty good, sorta".  I still sometimes get
an icon placed on top of another, but I've never figured out whether it's Icon
Wrap's fault or the fault of the INIT or cdev that owns the icon.  Anyway, it's
better than just letting the icons run off the right side of the screen.

What you need isn't another toolbox, it's the Serial Tool.  If you're running
under System 7, just drop the Serial Tool into your Extensions folder.  System
7's built-in Communications Toolbox will find it there.

Neil -

     Sure!  There are two types of SIMMs in the Mac LC.  THere's the VRAM SIMM,
which is (as far as I can tell) unique to Apple, and then there's the main RAM
SIMMs.  The SIMMs I was talking about were the main RAM SIMMs.

     As to 9 bit SIMMs in the LC, they will work fine ... Apple just doesn't
connect to the parity bit on a 9bit SIMM, so it doesn't matter if it's there
or not!  They are nominally a waste of money, however, my current suppliers
only charge $1.00 more for the 9-bit SIMMs, so if I stock, I stock 9bit (since
they work Mac AND PC, and not just Mac only.)

Subject: Virus help!!

It appears my hard drive has fallen victim to virus 004, the "sneak" virus.
 At least that is what interferon says.  It seems to have badly damaged my
desktop
file, for whenever it must display the icons for files it takes forever, as
though my Mac were making them up from scratch.  Some of the original icons
are still intact, but my Mac seems to have forgotten how to make the DA suitcase
and particular applications.  Soon after I found the problem I did a backup
of my hard drive, and I'm planning to reformat my hard drive unless anyone here
has any other suggestions for curing my computer's ailment.  The virus came
from a copy of "Remember v 1.2," a DA/init which displays upcoming events.
It is used every time I turn on my Mac because of the init, so it's obvious
to see why this type of file would be infected with a virus.  The actual virus
was found in a file used by "Remember" to store occasions.
Any advice would be of great help!  Thanks.

Pete: The reason you haven't found a demo for NovaLink Professional is that
one is not available yet. I hear tell that one may be ready soon when the

version of NLP 2.0 is finalized. If you want to get a taste of what NLP might
be like, look around for a shareware version (ancient history now) called
NovaLink
2.0 (not to be confused with NLP 2.0). The 2.0 NLP will be quite amazing with
new NovaTerm Windows mode (ala AOL and TeleFinder sort of). Keep tuned in
tho...the
real demo should be ready in the near future.

Ah, guess you're right... I tend to run a piece of software until I need the
new features of the new versions, and when 4.0 came out I did not need the new
features. Heck, I'm still running PageMaker 3.x !  :-)

I rarely update software just for the sake of doing so. Guess it's part of my
Scottish blood line!

I can't WAIT until I receive Sys 7.0 from Apple. Just sent in the reply card
that came with the si. I also just bought an LC for home use. Me and my kids
have fallen in love with that little jewel. You know what my kids said when
I told them I was going to get a Mac for home use? They said, "Don't buy one
of those slow ones, dad, like a Classic. We want one of the fast ones." (They'd
gotten use to my SE/30 :-)

By the way, on the LC I have a DoveFax Plus, with voice mail. I think After
Dark 2.0 is not allowing the voice mail to operate properly, or perhaps the
combo on the LC simply ain't working right. Gotta call Dove on this. Am
wondering
tho, with System 7, am I going to have to update just about all the stuff I
own? It's been some time since I've done so...

You may be right there. Actually, when I restored Word 3.01 from the master,
the first time I ran it, it failed. The next day someone asked me why my Oasis
screen was missing the Word button. So I told them it would not run, and said,
"Watch this thing bomb, Rick". Launched Word and low and behold, it ran! Talk
about weird! Maybe just a total shutdown made the difference. I don't remember
removing any INITs or changing anything else.

I'm going to do some software updating anyway.
But I am going to wait a little while before switching to Sys 7, and allow the
various vendors to release stable versions for S7...

Well, the Quark guy was in tonight, giving a demo of XPress 3.1.

I was floored.

Not only by what it can do that PageMaker probably can't even imagine doing;
but also by what PM can do that XPress 3.0 still can't do.  For example, the
rep said that even 3.0 can't drag items the same way PM does, showing
everything.
 I guess XPress 3.0 and below drag outlines only.  (To be fair, most if not
all of these little things are fixed in 3.1.)

Hint:  if anyone is thinking of buying XPress, do so *now*.  You get 3.0 and
a free update to 3.1 when it comes out in September or so (in fact, anyone who
bought after Dec. 4, 1990 gets the update free).  As soon as 3.1 is released,
the retail price goes up $100 to $895.  So get it now and save $100 retail.

Anyway, I want a copy.  I sure wish I had a need for it.  All this talk about
the control it gives the typesetter had me imagining that it must be a difficult
program to use.  HA.  Was I fooled.  All that power, _and_ ease of use as well.

sheesh.  And I'm stuck at PM 3 on a 286/12 under Win2.  On the bright side,
I get my daily naps in.

Oh, yeah--the rep also said that the NeXT version has been postponed (and he
figures permanently, for political reasons), and the Win3 version should be
out by the end of the year.

ummmmmm....

that would be the Macintosh.  Later referred to as the Mac 128, because it had
128K of RAM, 64K of ROM, an internal one sided 400K floppy drive, and not much
else.  There never was a 256K Mac.  The next iteration was the Fat Mac (calling
it Big Mac would have strained Apple Legal back then), so called because of
the whopping 512K of RAM it contained.  Other than that, it was substantially
the same as the 128K.

And never, ever, _ever_ was it referred to as anything even remotely like "286
Mac."

Copernicus is a full point program, including the sending and receiving of mail
and files.  It actually includes a subset of the Tabby program files, which

Even if Word did need a coprocessor, you would still have been able to run it
on your Plus, because the coprocessor problem happens only with the 68020.

I'll through my two cents in... Apple just broke ground on a huge new R&D campus
in Cupertino, so no, they are not leaving completely. The San Jose Mercury news
speculates that Apple will move the lower paying jobs out of here so that their
employees can afford to survive. Apple is also moving some parts of the business
to areas within CA that are less prone to earthquakes.

With the way taxes are going out here I expect a lot of companies to leave CA
entirely so that they can afford to do business, and Apple is no exception.

If she has DiskTop, she could use it to make the folder invisible when she is
not using it. Of course if someone sees her doing that sometime they'll catch
on quick and figure it out.

She could also use one of the more advanced disk utilities to set up a small
partition for Word. Most of the partitioning utilities allow you to password
protect individual partions.

As I understand it from a discussion on CompuServe about this same thing, both
Word and Excel expect a coprocessor if they see a 68030. Something about the
way they are compiled or some such. Which I think is nonsense. Just another
example of Microsoft following the rules, eh?

I can't swear to it, but I believe that MacDraw Pro, with the EPSF XTND
translator,
can save a file in EPSF format.

I own Stepping Out and used to use it before I got my 2 pager.
Stepping Out works OK and could be a good compromise.
Since I don't use it anymore I'd be willing to part with it for a reasonable
price.

I don't know about Doug but for a long time I used a nifty little INIT called
Big Screen, which does basically the same thing as Stepping Out, but a bit less
elegantly. It worked fine for me, and I used it to view large Word files or
to test my homebrewed programs on a "big" monitor. I never had any trouble with
it under 6.0.2, 6.0.4, or 6.0.5. It should be on SCORPION, and if you can't
find it, I can dig up my copy (I almost never throw anything away, which is
why DiskDoubler is one of my favorite programs :-]) and send it to you.

Sorry, Michael, but the forerunner of the Macintosh {named after an English

There is PAK from No-Gate Consulting which will handle archiving or un-archiving
of ZIP archives (including the buggy 1.01 version). It also handles ARC (from
S.E.A.) and SDN files (including the "security envelope" features), as well

it.  Is the error correction alone worth it?  The datacompression isn't much

Yep - a standard DIN-8 cable will work fine.  That's what the guy at my Printer
dealer (Printers Plus in Tyson's Corner, VA) said, and that's what I've been
using on my QMS for several months.  (I recently switched to PhoneNET, as we're
networking our house, but...)  The guy warned me that the printer and the
computer
need to be plugged into the same power receptacle, though.  Something about
the power being 'out of synch' or something like that... (Needless to say, I'm
not an electrical engineer!)  Works great, though.

Have put up one point here and runned into some problems:

My point is using 1.0b2

1) It seems that the ARC part in MacWoof refuses to unarc the
mailarchive I created to him. I used "PKARC -oct a" when creating the package
and he can't unpack it. He is running a Classic with 2 meg memory. When he copy
the file to his Amiga all went well with unarcing it and he got all the
.pkt-files
in it. Any problems with the Arc-part?

Ten years ago, when I got married the first time, I kept my records on a deck
of 3x5 file cards and it worked great.  If I was going to do it the same way
again, I'd use HyperCard or something simple like FileMaker to do the same
thing.
 Luckily, we aren't having everybody we know to this event, so keeping it
straightforward
with lists on WriteNow seems to be doing well, so far.

However, I am considering putting the "week before" schedule into a separate
Appointment Book, just for convenience sake....

PKZIP is a comercial format and from what I understand they have no intrest
in
porting or allowing a ZIP creator for macs.

Our user group buys bulk, DS/DD media from EduCorp and it comes packed in
sealed, SONY cartons - but each disk's shutter is blank!

Sony DOES sell "generic" media.

It is really not a "worry" that concerns me.  I am attempting to locate
ALL various and sundry bits and pieces of material that may lead me to
information on HYPERDRIVE patches, bug fixes, workarounds, updates,
unpublished and published inits and Apple and GCC information updates, ROM
version numbers (specifically for the Hyperdrive 2000 board), and etc.,
etc.

My search tends to take me in all directions and at times I need help in
determining what a "little gem" I had found happens to be.  I know (or
want to believe) that there must be many people out there that have
HyperDrive information that could be of use to me in my search.  So, I
just keep plodding along, sending messages seeking help.

A perfect example of this is YOUR answer.  I appreciate it very much, as
it has laid to rest a question that has been unanswered for quite a long
time, as I had hoped it would have been "piece of gold" that I had
discovered of course.  Thanks again for the assay.

I know others will see this message and just "maybe" I may find something
else to help me in my search.

What you're missing out on is that Nisus is so full of kitchen sinks
that it makes Fullwrite look wimpy.  (Except that Fullwrite is mucho
slow)  That's what I gather about Nisus anyhow.

Don't use Interferon, get the latest copy of Disinfectant (2.5.1).
Interferon is old and it is no longer being updated. Disinfectant is

Steve, I'm a little confused... don't you just need a different cable that
supports
RTS/CTS correctly?  If you are using a Comm program, then you don't need Carrier
detect of DTR.  So there is no problem supporting both the RTS/CTS lines.

Yeah...I just checked my MacUser address label and it seems I'm subscribing

(usually in CounterPoint, from what I've seen), QK will mistake an SF# key for

it CounterPoint related, and if so, how would CP be doing this?  I can't find

RR9.4 is an obsoleted shareware program that has been replaced by its commercial
successor, White Knight. The author has requested that people stop using RR9.4
and move up to the commercial version.  If you do not wish to do this, several
fine shareware term programs are avaliable, such as Zterm 0.85, which, while
not offering scripting, supports ANSI and Zmodem and is powerful in its
simplicity.

Howdy!

A friend of mine has an Imagewriter II in her office that gets used for
general purpose printing. One of the things she prints regularly is a
4 part continuous invoice form. Well, these forms get stuck in the
printer after printing about 10-20 of them. This causes a great deal
of frustration. The thing's been in for servicing several times, with
no noticeable improvement. Any attempt to adjust it has failed. The
conclusion is that an Imagewriter can't hack it.

So, she's searching for a replacement. What is a good multi-part
continuous forms printer with print quality equal or superior to the
Imagewriter, and with appletalk network connectivity?

Dorman, You asked for responses about CI$'s Navigator program.  I'm using it
constantly to dial up the St. Louis 9600 baud node.  It is one FANTASTIC
program.
 I use it to atuomatically dial CI$, get into the forums I want, download any
messages and files needed.  I then in offline mode, read, reply and enter E-Mail
messages and select new files to download or upload.  Then the next time I dial
CI$, all my requests are automatically processed.

As an aside, When reading messages, I get color animated ICONS of many of the
CI$ members, and many of them even have sound with different sounds for when
they are posting messages or receiving them.  All in all, it is a really great
program, designed to limit the actual time spent on-line.  It also is fully
System 7 compatible and runs in 32bit mode just fine (I'm running it on a Mac
IIci).

I've got the same problem with the LC.  The <CMD>-<CTL>-<RESET> works to reboot,

Craig, I've tried several times to File Request CommTool from your system. I've
tried the file name COMTOOL.CPT as well as the magic filename COMMTOOL.  I've
gotten Sertl101.cpt from your system, with no problems.

Is there a problem with File Request byte limits?  Since you've stated that
CommTool is around 700K+, have you limited the size of file requests to maybe
500K or something?

I'd really like to get this, and know of no source available to me, other than
FidoNet systems.

The resource fork of a file contains the resources. ALRT, DRVR, WIND, BNDL,
FONT, DLOG, DITL.  If SUM you are editing the hex code of the resources.  In
ResEdit you can edit the actual resources.  Addison-Wesley publishes a ResEdit
Companion that explains the basics.  the ALRT resources are alert dialog boxes.
 DLOG are other dialog types, DITL are the actual contents of the dialog boxes.

For right now I think I am going to have to settle on a less expensive printer
and abandon the idea of RET for a while. In time I reckon the cost of the IIIsi
will come down and then maybe I'll think about the HP line again. I had a chance
to play with a GCC BLPII printer the other day and was downright amazed by the
high quality of the letterforms - and this was without any smoothing. I printed
a 128-pt capital "o" and it was surprisingly low on jaggies. Small type also
looked pretty darned good. Unless I hear some horror stories about that line
of printers, I think that's the one I'll get for starters - and something else
later on.

A fellow in another conference said he doesn't like the way small point sizes
look when output via the PacPage unit.

Hmm. When I called the company's tech support dept. for more information on
how the unit handles fonts, the guy said "Gee, I *think* those are *our* fonts."
He honestly didn't know if they were from Bitstream, or Pacific Data Products,
or what. I found that odd!

If you were to print to the HP/PacData combo and had used Adobe's Helvetica
screen font, *and* if you had force-downloaded Adobe Helvetica to the printer
RAM, which would it use at print-time - its resident Helvetica, or the Helvetica
downloaded to RAM?

I would sure like it if someone came out with a true Adobe PS RISC-
based unit for the III series (not including the IIIsi, of course).

I wonder how fast that RISC-based unit is (I think they call it the PacData
XL for Mac or some such thing) compared with some of the faster 300 dpi printers
on the market - PS-410, and like that - if you install it in a III or IIID or
IIIP. Thanks for your detailed reply.

Alas, I am ***far*** from being an AWK guru - I can hardly figure out how it
works! I sure wish there were a full-blown implementation of SED for the Mac
(including: changes line endings to LF internally, perhaps, but writes them
out as plain old CR). Meaning: a stand-alone utility that doesn't require some
Unix-like shell on the Mac to run.

Failing that (and I'll steer clear of the Mac AWK program, after reading what
you wrote about it), I just take the text files via network to the DOS machine,
process 'em there, and send them back. That way I can also avail myself of batch
files for the processing. My regrets that I don't have any more information
- except this: To the small extent I can figure out how to use it, I use Rob
Duff's version of AWK (freeware) - look for AWK300.ZIP on bulletin boards. I
have sometimes considered getting a commercial AWK version, which I hear is
available from a company called Polytron, somewhere in Oregon (?). Dunno how
to contact them, though. It would be nice to have a version that is *FULLY
SUPPORTED*!!!

Sigh. WHY do they keep doing stuff like that? Is it Apple's idea of a little
joke to be played, again and again, on the users of its operating system
software?
I don't get it. This is the kind of thing that many people must have been
complaining
about for a long time - why the hell do they keep screwing it up?

Well, congratulations when you see the entries ALRT (alert), BNDL (Bundle),
etc. you are inside of the resource fork.  ResEdit is more graphical in nature

than Sum Tools, so it automatically lists all the seperate resources out
inside of the resource fork for you.
